GEN Y OPINION: Stop senseless tragedies from drunk violence

OUR drink-driven society is drastically becoming very worrying as more coward punch tragedies plague the front pages of our papers.

OUR drink-driven society is drastically becoming very worrying as more coward punch tragedies plague the front pages of our papers and make us question the true safety of civilisation today.

The results that come from excessive alcohol consumption and raging hormones are beginning to take their toll and create cracks within our close communities.

The recent passing of Cole Miller really hit close to home for me. He was only 18 (my age), out for a good night but sadly his family never got to see him home safe due to a fury-fuelled fist that struck him from behind.

Has our world suddenly started rotating the wrong way and as a result begun to twist everything good we once stood for? It scares me to know that we aren't paving the path to a more peaceful, prosperous world for future generations.

Instead of taking steps forward in building a stronger and safer future for our children and grandchildren, we are teetering on the fine line between timid and tenacious.

Everyone is entitled to feel like they can go out and enjoy themselves without looking over their shoulders with a fear of what every shadow may contain.

It's a very sobering, sombre thought that it could come down to the simplest flick of a wrist and someone's life could so easily be whisked away. Gone in seconds; all of the memories, friendships, experiences, successes, milestones and even learning curves. All gone. All due to deadly drunken deeds.

Times are changing faster than we may realise.

Malnourishing money situations can fabricate a highly stressful atmosphere riddled with shorter fuses and longer jail sentences. We all go through rough patches, heartbreak and let-downs but it's how we deal with it all that defines us and strengthens our spirits.

Sadly for Cole Miller it was a case of "wrong place at the wrong time".

For the sake of Cole and many others who have suffered and fallen due to these fatal blows, justice needs to come into play to bring closure and comfort for the victims' families and friends.

As for communities around Australia and worldwide that have been rattled by these sinister scenarios, I hope we soon find a solution to cease this sad string of tragedies for good.

Sometimes all it takes is a step back from the madness of society and it's harsh expectations to summon more strength, smother ourselves with more war paint and get back to our busy lives to fight for our dreams.
