The brother of cricketer Usman Khawaja allegedly resented the fact a university colleague he is accused of framing as a terrorist was about to be promoted at work.
Arsalan Khawaja was the supervisor of Mohamed Kamer Nilar Nizamdeen at the University of NSW and authorities believe there was no outward signs of bad blood between them.
But police will allege Khawaja, 39, was jealous of the younger man’s popularity within the university and his career success and was resentful that the up-and-coming commerce graduate was due to be promoted to junior project manager within the IT team.

It is understood Khawaja befriended Mr Nizamdeen in March and the pair never had any sort of argument and even visited a mosque together.
Police allege Khawaja was also upset about a supposed love affair between a woman and the Sri Lankan IT analyst, but there was no affair and it was all in his mind.
Khawaja had to report for bail yesterday after being charged with attempting to frame his friend with a bogus hit-list targeting former prime minister Malcolm Turnbull, former foreign minister Julie Bishop and landmarks including the Opera House.
Mr Nizamdeen was charged with planning attacks but the case sensationally fell apart in October when experts found no proof the handwriting in the notebook was his and charges were dropped.
Police will allege Arsalan wrote extremist material in the notebook and tipped off university security guards, falsely claiming it was the work of his colleague. Campus security then contacted police who handed it to the NSW Joint Counter Terrorism Team.
Khawaja reported for bail in the nick of time on Wednesday night, walking through the front doors of Paramatta Police Station at around 7.30pm dressed in a black polo shirt, black jeans and white Nike shoes.
