A MAN has fallen off the Darwin Esplanade cliff face in the early hours of Monday morning – the second person to do so in three days – resulting in multiple injuries.

About 3.25am on Monday emergency services received a call from a 36-year-old man who reported he had fallen near the Esplanade – just down from the playground.

Police and St John Ambulance NT found the man who had fallen 2m, injuring his knee and ribs. The injuries were not life threatening.

St John paramedics were unable to carry the man up the cliff due to the mangroves and steep terrain, forcing a police boat to be launched from the Larrakeyah naval base.

The man was rescued and taken to Royal Darwin Hospital where he was treated before being discharged Monday afternoon.

It comes after another fall at the CBD cliffs on Saturday, which left a 30-year-old man in hospital with serious injuries.

At 7.30am emergency services arrived to find the man at the bottom of the cliff face after he fell a “long” distance.

The man was rescued by boat before being transported to hospital where he remains in a stable condition.

Some parts of the coastline along the Esplanade have a sheer drop from a significant height, but these sections are fenced off and have warning signs.

St John Ambulance operations manager Craig Garraway told the ABC police were investigating both falls.

“I believe that area is very well fenced so I would assume you’d have to be over the wrong side of the fence to have fallen,” he said.

The men are just two of at least seven people to fall from the Esplanade cliffs in the past three years, but the Darwin council maintains it provided adequate risk assessments of the area.

A City of Darwin spokesman said the council undertakes regular “risk assessments of the Esplanade” to ensure all areas have “fully compliant fencing”.

“In addition to fencing, council also has signs spaced at regular intervals warning of the potential dangers associated with the cliffs,” the spokesman said.

“Last year the City of Darwin spent more than $40,000 upgrading fencing along the Esplanade.”

Less than two months ago a 61-year-old man had to be winched to safety after a nasty fall along the Esplanade.

CareFlight, police and emergency services were dispatched to the scene on June 30, after the man was reported injured at the base of the cliffs opposite from Peel St.

Authorities said he had sustained injuries but was conscious, and rescuers were forced to deal with difficult terrain to retrieve him, leading to a “vertical rescue”.

One death was tragically recorded along the Esplanade cliffs in 2020 when a 29-year-old man had a serious fall on December 28 2020.

The individual was declared dead at the scene.
