Dissecting murder: Australia's most interesting crime stats

THIRTY people have gone missing from across the Northern Territory, never to be seen again.

They come from a range of backgrounds and are all different ages, genders and ethnicities.

A large proportion of those missing in the NT were last seen at areas along the Stuart Hwy, and more than half of the cases have vanished from the Top End region.

Nationally there are more than 2500 people that are considered a long term missing person, according to Australian Federal Police data.

In 2021 alone there were 53,000 missing person reports submitted to police.

Australian Federal Police say the groups most at risk of becoming a missing person are children and youth, those with a mental illness of depression, the elderly and those living with dementia, people expressing suicidal thoughts and people with an intellectual or physical disability or without lifesaving medication.

If you have information on a missing person you should report it to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Crime Stoppers will refer the information to the relevant missing persons unit or the investigating officer on the case.

NATIONAL MISSING PERSONS WEEK 2022

MISSING Katherine man Paul Baker is the face of a renewed push for answers about 30 people in the NT.

An experienced camper, Mr Baker was last seen at his home on the outskirts of town on August 6 last year.

His sister Naomi Busbridge said not knowing where her brother is was heart-wrenching.

“There are so many questions and no answers. You wonder why, you wonder where and you wonder if you will ever seem the again or know what happened to them,” she said.

“You wonder if this will ever end or whether it will be like a giant void and a big black hole forever.”

Today marks the start of National Missing Persons Week, with a focus on asking all Australians to put themselves in the position of a loved one of someone missing.

This year’s theme for the digital awareness campaign is “Without Them” and will be spread through advertising materials on outdoor spaces across Australia and on buses, worth an estimated $2.5m.

“Young, old, family members, and loved ones all from a range of cultures have one thing incommon – the daily fears, hopes and endless questions they leave behind,” Acting Assistant Commissioner Jason Kennedy said.

“National Missing Persons Week is supported throughout the missing persons sector and within the broader community to bring much needed awareness and hopefully answers for those left behind.”
