A MAN has been winched to safety after being found injured at the bottom of a cliff along the Darwin Esplanade.
The 61-year-old man has been taken to Royal Darwin where he is recovering.
CareFlight, police and emergency services were dispatched to the scene on Thursday morning, after the man was reported injured at the base of the cliffs opposite from Peel St.
Authorities said he had sustained injuries but was conscious, and rescuers were forced to deal with difficult terrain to retrieve him, leading to a “vertical rescue”.
He was plucked from the scene at around 11.30am.
NT Emergency Service Manager Northern Command Operations Mark Cunnington said the treacherous geography complicated efforts to rescue the man.
“The terrain along the Esplanade is steep and highly vegetated. Multiple first response agencies working together enabled us to quickly and safely lift the man out and get him to medical professionals,” Mr Cunnington said.
“The circumstances around how he fell are still under investigation.”
