NT declares Perth, Peel region COVID hot spots after outbreak

The Northern Territory has slammed its border shut to parts of WA after Perth and the Peel region were recently plunged into an emergency three-day lockdown.

THE Northern Territory has slammed its border shut to parts of WA after Perth and the Peel region were recently plunged into an emergency three-day lockdown.

NT’s Acting Chief Health Officer Dr Charles Pain announced Perth and the Peel had been declared COVID-19 hot spots as of midnight on Friday.

It follows confirmed community transmission in that region on Friday, with Greater Perth being sent into a snap three-day lockdown from midnight.

NT Health said anyone who has travelled from the areas locked down will need to get a COVID-19 test and self-isolate until they receive a negative test.

The NSW government has also announced anyone who has travelled from Perth to New South Wales will need to self-isolate for the entirety of the three-day lockdown.

The announcement comes amid a COVID-19 outbreak at Perth’s Mercure Hotel, with a Victorian man testing positive in Melbourne today after completing 14 days of quarantine a WA hotel.

A pregnant woman and her four-year-old daughter have also tested positive after their stay, having contracted the virus from an infected couple who had returned from India and were staying a room opposite them.
