Champion jockey Michelle Payne admits to a few anxious family moments with the filming of her biopic Ride Like a Girl, which finally hits the big screen on September 8.

Champion jockey Michelle Payne says she will be relieved when her biopic Ride Like a Girl finally hits the big screen on September 8.
The film, directed by Rachel Griffiths and starring Teresa Palmer as Michelle, will have its world premiere in South Yarra before opening in cinemas on September 26. Ride Like a Girl tells Payne’s story as the first female jockey to win the Melbourne Cup.
“I’m really excited about it. It’s been a very long time coming,” Payne said at the 2019 Victorian Spring Racing Carnival launch in South Melbourne on Tuesday night.
“There were a few anxious moments with the film … and it wasn’t the smoothest sailing with my family. But I think everyone is going to be absolutely rapt with the final product.”
Payne hoped the film encouraged perseverance.

“Life is tough for everyone, and there’s so many highs and lows,” she said. “The main thing is, if you have a dream and you believe in yourself, anything is possible. I’m proud that’s what the film represents.”
Payne said Palmer “nailed everything, my characteristics, even down to the way I walk”.
How does Payne walk?
“I don’t know,” she said, laughing, “but Teresa got it down pat.”
