Woman found dead near Whitsunday Dr at Currumbin Creek

Neighbours have shared their horror after a woman’s body was found floating in a Gold Coast creek on Wednesday afternoon. LATEST UPDATES

Residents in the tight-knit community of Currumbin Waters are in a state of shock after a body was pulled from Currumbin Creek on Wednesday afternoon.

A Queensland Police Service spokesman said the woman’s body was found in the water near Whitsunday Dr at about 2.50pm.

Currumbin Waters resident Jenny Foster said a neighbour in the street had first noticed the body earlier in the afternoon, and was the one who called police.

Police used the neighbour’s boat to bring the body to shore.

The neighbour had told her the woman – who was Asian in appearance – was fully dressed with shoes on and appeared to have been in the water for a while.

She was told the woman was wearing a “child-sized” life vest that didn’t fit her properly and it was tied up at the front with rope.

“It didn’t look like a normal life vest.”

Other residents in the street praised police officers for their efforts.

A number of police vehicles, including a police boat, were parked in the street on Wednesday afternoon. Forensics officers were among police seen arriving at the scene.

Resident John Wright was working at the back of his property about 3pm when he saw something floating in the creek.

“It was dark … it was something I couldn’t recognise,” he said.

“I went back into the house and I said to my wife, ‘Come and have a look at what this might be’.

“When we went back out, our neighbour had his boat out on the creek and was securing it to take it back to shore.”

Mr Wright, who has lived in the area for more than a decade, said the body was clothed and “semi-submerged” in the water.

“It’s a shocking thing to happen in this area, these things don’t tend to happen here,” he said.

Chris Sparks was sitting out the back of his property having a drink with his neighbours when he noticed a heavy police presence at the front of his home.

“There was a lot of commotion,” he said.

“Multiple police cars turned up so we knew it was serious.

“It’s very sad and we were concerned for the welfare of our neighbours and the police who have to deal with this stuff.”

Mr Sparks said he didn’t see anything in the water while sitting in his backyard.

“This is not the sort of thing that happens in our neck of the woods,” he said.

“This (neighbourhood) had a very village atmosphere, we all know each other and everyone is very connected.”
