Surfers Paradise, the tourism heart of the Gold Coast, is poised to gain a new hotel – just for fun.
It will be a case of don’t bring your suitcase at the The Hijinx, a “play don’t stay” hotel within a huge entertainment venue that will open on December 9.
The hotel and two other fun attractions, a Holey Moley 18-hole mini-golf course and an Archie Brothers Cirque Electriq with dodgems, will be in the Gallery X building – previously the Galleria and then the Piazza.
National entertainment group Funlab expects to attract 600,000 or more fun lovers a year.
It has leased 3780 sqm at $750,000 a year for a fun location that will be below the Cali Beach Club.
The venue will be able to hold 410 people and will include three bars, 72 arcade machines, and six bowling lanes.
The group has had a Strike Bowling attraction in Surfers Paradise since 2006 and a Holey Moley venue since 2018. Both are in a 1500 sqm area in Circle on Cavill.
Funlab describes new arrival the Hijinx as a place where guests will be able to experience “quick-play immersive rooms that combine the theatre and wonder of a quirky New York hotel within what seems like 10 hotel rooms”.
Funlab CEO Michael Schreiber yesterday said Surfers Paradise was a perfect location for a world of fun.
“We couldn’t think of a bigger or better place to launch our first Queensland Hijinx Hotel, and second in Australia, than the Gold Coast — the entertainment heart of southeast Queensland.
“Our ethos is to create memorable fun experiences, and the Gold Coast’s culture mirrors this to a tee.
“Launching all three of our venues under one roof truly creates an out of this world entertainment experience for everyone to enjoy, day or night.
“We’re excited to see the joy our venues will bring to everyone – from locals, to tourists, to day-travellers.”
Funlab is Australasia‘s largest fun company provider, with eight brands and 37 venues in Australia and New Zealand.
The group, which has 1500 employees, has been acquired by global private-equity firm TPG Capital.
