A seemingly harmless phone charger has sent two Gold Coast teenagers to hospital after a shock explosion left them struggling to breathe.

Two teens have been taken to hospital after a phone charger exploded at their home on the Gold Coast.
Emergency services were called to the Yatala address at around 9.30pm on Thursday.
Paramedics assessed a girl and boy in their teens and took them to Gold Coast University Hospital.
A Queensland Ambulance Service statement said they were suffering with chest pain and breathing problems after the shock explosion.
It is understood chargers can explode if they are faulty or when phones are left on charge for long periods of time, causing them to overheat.
In 2023, a Melbourne tradie suffered severe burns after his portable phone charger exploded in his pocket.
The man told A Current Affair at the time “it was like someone holding a kettle … and (placing) it on your knee for a long time”.
“I thought that I was definitely going to die.”
In May last year, an Adelaide mother and son’s house burned down in the middle of the night after a faulty phone charger overheated.
A Metropolitan Fire Service spokesperson told Nine News at the time it was important to use a certified charger or one that came with the device.
“Otherwise it could lead to catastrophic structure fires like the one that we had last night.”
