The second round of university offers is here, with thousands of high school graduates across Victoria receiving an offer in the January 12 release.

In December, Sebastian Poliness and Hannah Phung shared there was an immense feeling of excitement for them as they got ready to receive a university offer.

The 18-year-olds, both 2023 graduates of The Geelong College in Newtown, will be among the thousands receiving a Victorian Tertiary Admission Centre (VTAC) December round offers.

Ms Phung, who achieved an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) of 98.10 on results day last week, said she would be starting a Bachelor of Music majoring in performance in Melbourne.

She said she had auditioned for her spot earlier in the year, and was hoping it would be made official with an offer on December 21.

Ms Phung said music had always been her passion, ever since starting to play the violin at age five.

She also picked up the bagpipes at 10, and said she had always been involved in choir and other music classes throughout her schooling.

“Music’s just such a passion,” she said.

“It feels kind of crazy (to be facing starting university), but I’m excited.

“I’m going to learn so much next year and onwards.”

Mr Poliness achieved an ATAR of 99.10.

While he said he was focused on embracing the summer and his new-found freedom, he was hoping to either study commerce and engineering at Melbourne University, or law or science at university interstate.

Mr Poliness said he was “really excited” for what the future would bring for him.

He said he was interested in the four fields as options because they were broad and would allow him flexibility.

“I can be quite versatile with them,” Mr Poliness said.

“I think it would be good to get away (and move interstate).

“It would be great to get out, and have a bit of an adventure.”

Meanwhile, Deakin University has revealed its most popular courses for 2024, with nursing, occupational therapy and optometry the most in-demand by Geelong school-leavers in the Victorian Tertiary Admission Centre’s (VTAC) December round of offers.

A total of 5647 first-round offers were made by Deakin, including 1766 across the university’s regional campuses in Geelong and Warrnambool.

Diploma of Nursing, Diploma of Community Services, and Certificate IV in Youth Work are the most popular courses at The Gordon TAFE for next year.

Deakin’s Teaching and Learning pro vice-chancellor Helen Partridge wished school-leavers well for the next stage of their journey.

Professor Partridge said Deakin was pleased to offer places to those eyeing tertiary studies, including those who lived in regional areas and wanted accessible higher-education options closer to home.

“Deakin has a proud track record of offering courses that are not just popular but that prepare our students for the jobs of the future,” she said.

“New students can expect to learn from some of the best experts in their field at Deakin and can be confident they will find themselves in a supportive and engaging learning environment that embraces new technologies, ways of learning, and that strives for academic excellence.”

VTAC chief executive Teresa Tjia said students should celebrate the offer they had received on Thursday with their families, friends and teachers.

“Your offer is a fantastic achievement to enjoy these holidays and share with those who have supported you,” Ms Tjia said.

“If you haven’t received an offer (on Thursday) or have changed your mind, take this opportunity to consider your preferences by Friday’s change of preference deadline.

“There is still time to seek out support from your school, tertiary institutions, and VTAC

to maximise your opportunity to study next year.”

Change of preference deadlines and other information is available via the VTAC website.

Further study offers will be made on January 12 and 30, and February 6, 13 and 20 next year.

These will include offers for some courses which did not make offers in the December round and for students whose results were not available in time for the December offer round, including those studying the International Baccalaureate (IB) and some interstate students.

There will also be other opportunities to apply directly to study at Deakin University.

Many institutions offer varied pathways into courses as well.
