10 arrests as police crack down on alleged serious offending across Geelong

Geelong detectives have arrested 10 people in recent weeks for serious alleged offences including armed robbery, kidnapping and possessing drugs.

Geelong detectives have arrested 10 people in recent weeks for serious alleged offences including armed robbery, kidnapping and possessing illegal weapons.

A number of illegal firearms were also seized as part of the crackdown.

Those taken into custody include a 31-year-old Wandana Heights man after detectives searched a property on July 24 and allegedly found two firearms and 200g of methylamphetamine.

He was charged with trafficking a commercial quantity of methylamphetamine and a possessing a firearm as a prohibited person.

He was remanded to front the Geelong Magistrates Court on August 29.

A 33-year-old Norlane man and a 34-year-old Corio man were arrested this week after an alleged kidnapping on June 6.

Both men were charged with kidnap, false imprisonment and making threats to inflict harm.

They were both remanded to appear at Geelong Magistrates Court on October 22.

Police searched a Norlane home on July 30, with officers allegedly finding a loaded firearm.

A 38-year-old Corio man was arrested and charged with prohibited person possess firearm and burglary.

He was bailed to appear at Geelong Magistrates Court on September 26.

Detectives arrested a 29-year-old Corio man after a police vehicle was allegedly rammed on July 30.

The man allegedly fled the scene before he then attempted to carjack another vehicle in Geelong before he was arrested.

Police also allegedly found drugs and multiple knives in his possession.

He was charged with two counts of expose emergency worker to risk by driving, possess drug of dependence, possess prohibited weapons.

He was remanded to appear at Geelong Magistrates Court on August 16.

Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Guthrie said offenders caught with an illegal firearm could end up spending years behind bars.

“Geelong continues to be an exceptionally safe place for both residents and visitors, with crimes against the (person) and property and deception offences below pre-Covid levels,” he said.

“When crimes do occur, our dedicated teams of detectives in Geelong are working around

the clock to identify and hold individuals accountable for criminal activity.

“The proactive efforts of detectives this week should serve as a stern warning to anyone thinking about engaging in criminal activity.

“There is no hiding from police - you will be found and held to account.”
