TODAY’S NEWS
A man has been transported from Aurukun by the Royal Flying Doctor Service after he was injured by an arrow.
Police responded to the incident on Kang Kang Rd in Aurukun at 12.15pm.
An RFDS spokeswoman confirmed they were tasked by Queensland Health to conduct an aeromedical retrieval of the man. She was unable to comment further.
A Cairns Hinterland and Health Service spokesman confirmed the man was in transit with RFDS to Cairns Base Hospital.
Another Aurukun man, who requested to remain anonymous, said the incident happened immediately after Aurukun Shire Council convened a community meeting at Aurukun Town Square to address law and order issues.
The man said a Queensland police representative spoke at the meeting, saying he had “confiscated enough bows and arrows to fill a hunting shop”.
The man said a fight broke out when the meeting concluded and he “heard a man was shot in the leg by an arrow”.
Aurukun Shire Council was unavailable for comment.
WEDNESDAY’S NEWS
Queensland Fire and Emergency Services crews were called to attend a large rubbish fire on the corner of Marshall and Dillon streets in Bungalow on Thursday morning.
A QFES spokesman confirmed that the crew was called at 8.46am and on scene shortly after.
“Initial indications were that it was a rubbish truck with a dump load on fire,” he said.
“But when the crew arrived on scene at 8.50am, they saw no evidence of this.
“They then came upon a large rubbish pile was involved (on fire) so two firefighters in breathing apparatus attacked the fire.”
The representative said the fire was extinguished around 9.05am.
“Firefighters dampened down the pile fire and they are currently waiting on machinery to arrive to break up the pile,” he said.
“We understand there is a 20 to 30 minute wait for the machine.
“Once the pile is complete broken down firefighters will then do more dampening down.”
He said there was at this stage there no indication that fire investigators would be called.
It is understood Queensland Ambulance were called to the scene.
MONDAY’S NEWS
Police are reminding motorists that there could be traffic delays when the world’s best mountain bikers come to Cairns this week.
The Crankworx mountain bike (MTB) event is scheduled to commence at the Smithfield MTB Track from Wednesday October 5.
Cairns police are reminding locals and visitors to be aware of changed traffic conditions around the James Cook University, Smithfield MTB track and Cheviot St, Smithfield.
A police representative said locals and visitors are reminded this major event runs through to Sunday October 9, so those travelling to the event venue at Smithfield or the northern beaches may be affected by some traffic delays.
Due to the expected increase in vehicular and pedestrian traffic around the overflow car park, a local traffic management company will be managing speed reduction on Cheviot St, between Obrien Rd and Sidlaw St, Smithfield.
Police said the event organisers can be contacted on (03) 8698 2050 prior to the event.
To report issues during the event, the Event Control Centre on 0458 725 805 or the secondary number of 0458 472 100 will be operational from Wednesday, October 5, through to Sunday,
October 9.

The Peninsula Developmental Road is subject to a 5 Tonne GVM limit from Laura to Coen due to water over the road.
Edmonton/Gordonvale
Roadworks are being carried out on the Bruce Highway — Cairns Southern Access Corridor — Stage 3: Edmonton to Gordonvale. Delays expected (during active hours of work), with all lanes in both directions affected. The work is expected to run until June 30, 2023.
Feluga
Major intersection upgrade at East Feluga Road and Bruce Hwy. Delays are expected to August 12, 2022.
Lake Eacham
Wrights Creek Road is closed to all traffic. Motorists are advised to use an alternative route.
Ravenshoe
Roadworks have been reported at Grigg St, Ravenshoe and are expected to December 12, 2022.
Wrights Creek
Hill Road Closed permanently from the Bruce Highway to Harris Road to December 2024.
