Cairns car crash: Driver flees after hitting light pole on Anderson Street, Manunda

A driver has run from the scene of a crash after a car hit a light pole at a major intersection, causing peak hour traffic delays. Find out the latest details.

Car smashes light pole out of ground

A DRIVER has run from the scene after a car crashed into a power pole at a busy intersection during peak hour traffic.

A Queensland Police spokeswoman said they received the call at 7.50am about the single-vehicle crash on Anderson street at Manunda.

She said police were trying to find the driver to investigate how it happened.

Police stated the vehicle had not been reported stolen at the time of the crash.

A motorist driving directly behind the car before it crashed was visibly shaken after allegedly being cut off in peak hour traffic and seeing the Mitsubishi Lancer leave the road and collide at speed with the light pole.

The motorist said she saw the male driver flee the wreck wearing a red hoodie into nearby bushland.

Police at the scene alleged the driver was not adhering to the 40km/h work zone speed limit.

A Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokeswoman said they arrived on the scene about 7.58am to help with the light pole that had been knocked over.

Both lanes were affected inbound towards the James Street and Martyn Street roundabout. Department of Transport and Main Roads advised drivers to proceed with caution.

Ergon Energy, Queensland Ambulance Service were also on scene.
