Usually reserved for elite athletes, the great gains that come from altitude training will be available to the Townsville public for the first time when an exciting new business opens this weekend.

When the human body is in an oxygen-reduced environment, like being at the top of a mountain, it adapts by enhancing the way it uses oxygen to produce energy.

No stranger to serious training, ex-footy player and entrepreneur Roman Brady founded the first Air Locker Training studio in Newcastle in 2019, going on to licence 29 more franchises around the country, including their newest at 18 Village Drive, Idalia.

Air Locker Training Townsville co-owner Daisy Lamb has been a fixture of the local fitness industry over the past five years.

“I’m very excited, it’s been a long time coming. We’ve got a huge following so far, so really excited to bring this concept and this initiative to Townsville,” Ms Lamb said.

“The simulator mimics the effects of altitude training by pumping nitrogen air into the group training room … it reduces the oxygen from the normal level (20.9 per cent), and then turns it into the high altitude environment level (14 per cent oxygen, equivalent to 3200-3500m).

“If you were to work out at normal oxygen levels, and then do the exact same workout in altitude, you’d build muscle faster, you’d burn fat faster, (and) your recovery time would be less.”

Simulated Altitude Training has Air Locker’s clients feeling fitter, leaner, stronger, recovered from injuries faster, and happier – thanks to boosted “happy hormone” serotonin levels.

Ms Lamb said the training was suitable men and women, from 14 years to the 60 years plus demographic in the Silver Sneakers program, where oxygen levels weren’t lowered as far.

“People love doing things the easy way, so if they can get more out of doing less, that’s always a big selling point,” she said.

The business was attracting interest from numerous Townsville sporting teams and fitness ventures.

Ms Lamb praised the support they received from Otto’s Fresh Food Market owner Don Peel, who manages The Precinct shopping centre in Idalia.

Approached by several different gym franchises looking to secure a space at the centre, Mr Peel said Air Locker’s unique offering was one of the “final pieces of the puzzle”.

“Townsville misses out on a little bit of stuff in comparison to the southeast corner. Wherever possible, we’d love to facilitate something new and exciting in the town,” Mr Peel said.

“(Air Locker’s) very close to the army barracks and the Murray Sporting Complex so there’s a lot of synergies within the location.”

The official opening is on Saturday, November 11.
