The brainchild of an Australian boxing legend, UBX gyms are springing up around the globe, inspiring Townsville’s Wade Carra to open Townsville’s second franchise next month.

Pronounced “you-box”, UBX was launched in 2016 by four-time world champion boxer Danny Green and fitness and tech entrepreneur Tim West, quickly spreading to 90 boutique gyms across Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Created with the input of former Wallabies strength and conditioning coach Brad Harrington, UBX’s 45-minute fitness routine consists of a 12-round circuit, with six rounds dedicated to boxing exercises and the remainder combining functional strength, cardio and conditioning movements.

Originally from Mareeba in far north Queensland, Mr Carra moved to Townsville with his family in 2005 before embarking on a semi-professional rugby league career with the Central Queensland Capras while also working as a coal miner.

After being struck down by knee injuries two years ago, Mr Carra said he began looking at alternative ways of training, leading to his life-changing visit to the nearby UBX at Annandale Central.

“I couldn’t do much with my legs so I decided to put down the footy boots and pick up the boxing gloves,” he said.

“I’ve always been interested in boxing, and from then on, I really started to pursue it.

Not only was it an “addictive” way of training, but it was fun and convenient.

“What I love most about UBX is how quick it is, you’re in and out within 42 minutes … and burn up to 700 calories,” he said.

“You can learn and grow just from throwing one basic punch, then the footwork gets added into it, then the breath work, once you put it all together you start to catch a rhythm and a flow.”

Needing to find the right space where he could operate a 24-hour UBX gym, with a shower and toilet, Mr Carra turned to Colliers Townsville commercial leasing executive Reagan Stokley, who recommended 81 Ingham Rd, West End.

“The space was great for what Wade was after as the space was more or less ready to go with the tenancy mostly fitted out,” Mr Stokley said.

“The proximity of the tenancy to the CBD and other work precincts is great for access to people coming and going from work.”

Other big pluses for the venue were the parking and walk-up solar set-up, which will take a large chunk out of power bills.

By co-locating the space between UBX and HHH Barbers, he said the two businesses would combine to activate the space with consistent activity.
