An exciting workout trend called KX Pilates is expanding in Townsville after capturing the imagination and motivation of residents looking to get the upper hand in the battle against the bulge.

Founded upon the “Kaizen Xperience”, originating from the Japanese philosophy of “kaizen” or “change for the better”, KX combines traditional Reformer Pilates principles with progressive techniques in low impact, full-body workouts.

Former Star 106.3 breakfast presenter Brady Ellis and his wife Lily were inspired to bring KX to Townsville after trying it in Adelaide a couple of years ago.

“It was not on my mind that it was something that I wanted to do, but halfway through the class, I genuinely started to think, ‘wow, this is incredible, I love it, and we don’t have anything like this’.”

His “business brain kicked in”, and they began researching and putting the business together before launching their first studio in Idalia in October 2021.

Comparing traditional Pilates to Test cricket, he said KX was the Big Bash – a fast-moving, fitness-based workout using a reformer machine, with the music turned up.

“Everyone who goes there for the first time is surprised at what a big workout it is … we give them an amazing 50 minute high-intensity full body workout and they didn’t expect it,” he said.

“We have a very high rate of people that try us out and stay with us because they genuinely love it.

“Their bodies feel incredible, their minds feel incredible, and they’re in the best shape they’ve ever been.”

While his self-proclaimed title of “King of Pilates in the North” was yet to catch on, there was a good chance it could after their second KX Pilates studio opens at Kirwan’s Eastbrooke Health Hub on July 15.

“We know we’re on to a good thing and people have been loving it so why deprive the good people with Kirwan any longer?

“We are in the business of changing lives … and it kind of feels like we’d be being selfish by not letting more people try it.”
