Revealed: Best performing schools in 2024 NAPLAN

Public schools with academically selective opportunity classes and some of the state’s most elite private schools battled it out for the top spots in the 2024 NAPLAN ranking for Year 5 students.

Sydney Grammar School cruised into the number one ranking once again, several marks clear of the rest of the state’s primary schools with an average score of 641.

The Daily Telegraph has analysed the performance of every school in NSW by averaging Year 5 students’ reading, writing, spelling, grammar and numeracy results in the 2024 NAPLAN.

Like top NSW secondary school James Ruse Agricultural High School, Sydney Grammar leveraged a particularly high numeracy score to achieve their top result.

North Shore private girls school Abbotsleigh leapt into second place with a score of 595.8, followed by Woollahra Public School with 594.2, Matthew Pearce Public School in Baulkham Hills with 595.2 and Beecroft Public School with 589.

All of the top 25 primary schools were either elite private schools or had academically selective opportunity classes, and were situated in the greater Sydney region.

The Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority also issued a list of “schools making a difference”, highlighting schools with consistently strong NAPLAN performance against students with similar socio-educational attributes.

The list includes 20 of the state’s highest achieving schools against socio-educationally similar schools, and two of the highest achieving schools in rural and remote areas.

Southwest Sydney schools were strongly represented in the list of 20, including John the Baptist Catholic Primary School in Bonnyrigg Heights, Al-Faisal College Campbelltown, Fairfield West Public School, Our Lady of Mt Carmel Catholic Primary School Mount Pritchard and Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School Mount Pritchard Cabramatta.

In regional NSW, the list of 20 highlighted Westdale Public School in Tamworth and Holy Trinity West Wagga.

ACARA CEO Stephen Gniel said the My School website provided parents, carers and the community with clear and transparent information on every school.

“ACARA’s role is to provide detailed, accessible, timely and meaningful school education

performance information,” Mr Gniel said.

The My School update includes 2024 NAPLAN results, school profile, enrolment and attendance data, as well as financial information, vocational education training participation and outcomes and Year 12 results from 2023.
