The state’s reigning top secondary school has taken first place once again in the 2024 NAPLAN, with other high performers jostling for the other top spots.
The academically selective James Ruse Agricultural High School in Carlingford cruised into the number one ranking once again, several marks clear of the rest of the state’s secondary schools with an average score of 736.2.
The Daily Telegraph has analysed the performance of every school in NSW by averaging Year 9 students’ reading, writing, spelling, grammar and numeracy results in the 2024 NAPLAN.
Despite topping the state, James Ruse’s results fell slightly from their 2023 score of 747.2.
Like top NSW primary school Sydney Grammar School, James Ruse leveraged a particularly high numeracy score to achieve their top result.
A new competitor was on their tails in 2024, with fellow academically selective public school North Sydney Girls High School leaping from fourth to second place with a score of 722.6.
Fellow 2023 top achievers Baulkham Hills High School and Sydney Girls High School came in third and fourth with scores of 715.6 and 714 respectively.
In a significant improvement on a strong 2023 result, music-focused public institution Conservatorium High School jumped from 15th to fifth in the 2024 rankings with a score of 710.4.
All of the top 25 secondary schools were either academically selective public schools or elite private schools in the greater Sydney region.
The Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority also issued a list of “schools making a difference”, highlighting schools with consistently strong NAPLAN performance against students with similar socio-educational attributes.
The list includes 20 of the state’s highest achieving schools against socio-educationally similar schools, and two of the highest achieving schools in rural and remote areas.
Southwest Sydney schools were strongly represented in the list of 20’s secondary schools, with Al-Faisal College Campbelltown, St Narsai Assyrian Christian College in Horsley Park and Canley Vale High School receiving a nod.
The Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority’s CEO Stephen Gniel said the My School website provided parents, carers and the community with clear and transparent information on every school.
“ACARA’s role is to provide detailed, accessible, timely and meaningful school education
performance information,” Mr Gniel said.
The My School update includes 2024 NAPLAN results, school profile, enrolment and attendance data, as well as financial information, vocational education training participation and outcomes and Year 12 results from 2023.
