The biggest NAPLAN improvers for schools in the Coffs Coast region have been revealed along with the schools which have gone backwards.

Glenreagh Public School, northwest of Coffs Harbour, recorded the biggest improvement for a primary school with the average Year 5 NAPLAN results increasing by 10.05 per cent over the past five years of NAPLAN.

Coffs Harbour Christian Community School at Bonville was the second best with an increase of 7.83 per cent followed by St Augustine’s Primary School at Coffs Harbour with an increase of 7.14 per cent.

Meanwhile, Bellingen High School recorded the biggest improvement for a secondary school with average Year 9 NAPLAN results increasing by 0.82 per cent over the past five years of NAPLAN.

Bishop Druitt College at Coffs Harbour was the second best with a 0.03 per cent increase followed by Orara High School at Coffs Harbour with a change of -0.48 per cent.

At Glenreagh Public, the success story has been anything but pot-luck.

Relieving principal Jessica Fowler said the school took a data-informed approach and identified areas for improvement.

“It’s a great feeling to be getting good outcomes for the kids,” she said.

Ms Fowler said the school had used an “intensive data-driven approach” in recent years – and empowered teachers to use alternate methods to address areas of need.

“It’s about changing teacher practise, where needed, and it’s research-based,” she said.

“After all, the teachers are the most valuable resource in the classroom.”

The nationwide analysis compared the five-year change in NAPLAN results from 2017 and 2021 and revealed the schools which have improved their Year 5 and Year 9 student scores the most.

It was calculated by each school’s combined results for each NAPLAN subject in 2017 and compared to the same results in 2021.

Meanwhile, Dorrigo Public School recorded the lowest improvement for a primary school on the Coffs Coast, with the average Year 5 NAPLAN results returning a result of -8.91 per cent over the past five years of NAPLAN.

Coffs Harbour High School recorded the lowest improvement for a secondary school, returning a result of -3.99 per cent over the past five years.
