When out-of-control bushfires tore through the Bega Valley in late 2019, they left in their wake not only destroyed homes and businesses, but a generation of schoolchildren and families scarred.
More than two years later, those same schoolchildren have overcome hurdles posed by the Covid pandemic to become the most improved year 5 cohort over the past five years in the NSW NAPLAN testing.
Bega school principal David Proudlove said the result was a testament to the staff’s hard work but warned it would still take some years before the fallout from the bushfires was entirely overcome.
“The bushfires deeply scarred many, many families,” Mr Proudlove said.
“It will take two or three years before we can really look at how it influenced schooling.
“But, I think the NAPLAN results are evidence we are forging ahead as a community.”
Sapphire Coast Anglican College in Bega recorded the biggest improvement for a primary school, with the average Year 5 NAPLAN results increasing by 10.4 per cent over the past five years of NAPLAN.
Mr Proudlove said the far south coast campus was a close, tight-knit community, with students drawn from as far afield as Tathra, Eden, and Merimbula.
“We are very representative of the whole Bega Valley,” he said.
“We focus on not leaving anyone behind.
“We believe in inclusive education, and that has had a positive impact on learning.
“Our mantra is 100 per cent kindness. We celebrate all sorts of achievements.”
Marulan Public School at Marulan was the second best with an increase of 9.9 per cent, followed by Saints Peter and Paul‘s Primary School at Goulburn with an increase of 7.06 per cent.
Meanwhile, St Patrick‘s Parish School in Cooma recorded the biggest improvement for a secondary school, with average year 9 NAPLAN results increasing by 3.63 per cent over the past five years of NAPLAN.
Goulburn High School at Goulburn was the second best with a 2.81 per cent increase followed by Southern Highlands Christian School at Bowral with an increase of 2.36 per cent.
The analysis compared the five year change in NAPLAN results from 2017 and 2021 and revealed the schools which have improved their Year 5 and Year 9 student scores the most.
It was calculated by each school‘s combined results for each NAPLAN subject in 2017 and compared to the same results in 2021.
Meanwhile, St Joseph’s Primary School in Boorowa recorded the lowest improvement for a primary school with the average Year 5 NAPLAN results returning a result of -11.11 per cent over the past five years of NAPLAN.
While, Mulwaree High School in Goulburn recorded the lowest improvement for a secondary school returning a result of -4.84 per cent over the past five years.
