When lockdowns gripped the country earlier this year, teachers in the state’s southeast adapted on the fly, producing new learning methods. Their hard work has yielded results in the 2022 NAPLAN testing.

Frensham School and Gib Gate School are the top performing NAPLAN schools in South East NSW.

Frensham School principal Sarah McGarry said staff at the Mittagong school implemented programs this year to inspire students to grow academically and personally, particularly the “Writing Project”.

“In the project, students are given daily opportunities to write and to learn new skills from their peers, teachers, and inspiring authors who have delivered workshops in person and via ZOOM,” she said.

“In mathematics, our teachers have worked hard to ensure students know and understand the ‘reason’ for learning so students can transfer their knowledge and skills to the range of subjects they study. Students can also then transfer those skills to their everyday life, now and into the future.”

Ms McGarry said she was excited to learn that her students, who topped the state in Year 9 at NAPLAN over five years, had taken up the challenge with resilience learned throughout the past few years.

“We are also proud of our teachers who have enabled their continued achievement in the range of areas across the curriculum and in addition to the foundation skills of literacy and numeracy,” she said.

An independent analysis of five years of NAPLAN results has revealed the schools which consistently performed the best in the year 5 and year 9 tests between 2017 and 2021.

Over those five years, Gib Gate School in Mittagong had higher year 5 yearly results than any other school in South East NSW, scoring an average of 2715.0 each year.

Oxley College in Burradoo was the second best for the region with an average score of 2665.0, while St Joseph‘s Primary School in Boorowa was the third best with an average score of 2662.5.

The top performing year 9 school was Frensham School, in Mittagong, where the average yearly result was 3138.75 over the five years.

Oxley College in Burradoo was the second best for the region with an average score of 3058.0, while Snowy Mountains Grammar School in Jindabyne was the third best with an average score of 2988.0.

To determine how each school performed between 2017 and 2021, their average scores for each year were combined and the yearly average found.

Special schools, schools with fewer than 20 students enrolled in either year, and schools that did not report any results for NAPLAN subjects in either year were excluded from the analysis.

The figures were independently compiled from the Federal Government‘s MySchool website.
