When the NRL bad boy fell for the reality television star, it felt like a well-worn script. But there is nothing ordinary about the love story of Susie Bradley and Todd Carney.

After they met in 2019, they faced their fair share of adversities including Carney’s problem with alcohol, says Bradley, which led to their separation months before they were due to get married in 2023.

Bradley was convinced it was over.

But after a 30-day stint in rehab, Carney, who played for the Canberra Raiders, Sydney Roosters and Cronulla Sharks, transformed his life and the pair got back together.

Now, two years on, and both now two years sober, the couple are more in love than ever.

The couple, who have been together for six years, celebrated their wedding at their Queensland property in Wonglepong in the Scenic Rim on January 19 this year.

The ceremony was in the gardens of their lush property followed by the reception on the deck of their home, which they bought in November, 2023.

Bradley’s daughter from a previous relationship, Baby, 10, was a flower girl and Carney and Bradley’s son, Lion, 3, was the page boy.

Among their 65 guests was Carney’s former NSW State of Origin teammate and friend Mitchell Pearce.

How did you meet?

We met through Instagram in January 2019.

Anyone who has any idea of who Todd is and who I am would think we met because I was briefly on a season of MAFS (Married At First Sight) but it was completely random.

I didn’t have a clue who he was and my season of MAFS hadn’t even aired yet.

I quite liked chasing boys and I used to have an equation where if I was bored, I’d go on to the profiles of hot girls to see which boys they were following, that’s how I found hot guys.

I used to like a recent photo of theirs, then an older photo and then give them a follow. They (the boy) would usually notice and do the same back and slide into your DMs, which is what happened with Todd.

He sent me a message and we chatted on and off for two weeks.

He’d retired from NRL five months earlier. I had no idea of his level of fame until the day we went out to breakfast and a couple of young boys asked him for a photo.

I said to him “what’s the go?” and he said, “I was on Home and Away”, but I knew he was joking because I’m obsessed with that show and know all the characters.

It wasn’t until a month later I realised the level of his success in the NRL space.

How did being on MAFS impact your relationship?

My season of MAFS aired a month after we met. Todd and I were very serious and we loved each other very early on.

I didn’t tell him initially but I knew I had to break it to him eventually. When I did, I told him I was on the show and sorry about it.

I was portrayed as a villain and that’s rough.

Todd had also been dragged over the coals in the media throughout his career and knew how I was feeling. It was him who got me through it.

How did your relationship unfold?

We were together for a while and planned our wedding for December 2023.

But in June that year we separated because Todd had a problem with alcohol. I could not be part of that any longer.

He was a binge alcoholic so that meant he didn’t drink every day but when he had just one sip, no matter the circumstance, he would not stop. When I was with him and he wasn’t drunk, he was the best person I knew.

I had been through too much in my life, I didn’t need that.

Ten months later, when he checked himself into rehab I knew he was serious about getting better. As soon as he got out, we moved back in together and we’re more in love than ever.

The proposal?

On Mother’s Day last year Todd took us to our favourite beach, Wategos, in Byron Bay. He got someone to write “Will you marry me?” in the sand. I didn’t think it was for me until he was down on one knee.

Were there any surprises on the day?

I didn’t want to supply any alcohol at all. Todd isn’t the only one who is sober, I joined him in sobriety the day he got out of rehab and it’s been two years now.

I was happy for people to BYO.

But as we were walking to our reception, he told me he had supplied some alcohol. He wanted people to still enjoy that side of the celebrations.

It was a shock. But it was the best way to handle it and it turned out well.

How did you choose your dress?

I had been working out and my body was looking good so I wanted a dress to complement it. We were out shopping and my girlfriends convinced me to try a halter-neck dress and I loved it straight away.

What did you think seeing Susie for the first time?

Todd:I was nervous and then proud as punch. I was so happy and in love when I saw her. I got emotional straight away.

Any unique details about your wedding?

Todd’s dad passed away when he was 22 and the children carried down the aisle a framed portrait of his dad. It was a surprise for Todd.

Best wedding gift you received?

My girlfriends and I took sexy photos of me on polaroids and gave them to Todd throughout the night.
