I hired a $5k private box at a concert for my kid's 10th birthday party

"Fully catered. This chick's got more money than sense. She must have an illegal/R-rated side hustle."

Common myths of being a working parent

When my kid was about to turn 10, I decided he deserved an extra special celebration.

It had been just the two of us for years, and he was (in my unbiased opinion) the most awesome kid to grace the planet.

And so I shelled out thousands of dollars to take him and his mates to a show... in a corporate box. For five grand.

I actually had my many reasons for this unprecedented splash of cash, which I justified to myself.

Yes, the other parents were p*ssed at me for "raising the bar so high." But to my son and his mates, I was a total hero: so it was totally worth it.

"It was a milestone birthday"

I admit that as an only child, this kid got a pretty decent party every year. Well, two, actually - one with either all of his class or at least 20 mates, and one with family and close family friends.

I also admit that I wanted to celebrate this brilliant kid every year in a big way - not only because I love him, but also, a little thanks to that old 'friend' of mine - Single Mum Guilt.

So, we got to planning. We'd already had parties at a lot of the typical venues around town, and we wanted to do something different.

We thought outside the box... and ended up inside the box. A full-blown bougie corporate box.

What a way to wow a bunch of 10-year-olds: take them to see Nitro Circus (think Jackass with motorbikes) which would luckily be on the same weekend, and do it in style.

Actually, that bit didn't matter so much to me for the sake of it; but there were a lot of other pros in contrast to buying individual general admission seats to the show.

I could keep all the kids safe in one area, easily. There would be a bathroom that was not open to the public - so they could go together without me and I wouldn't be leaving kids alone in the seats.

We could get pre-ordered food (catered to my kid's allergies) and drink delivered with staff there to help, as opposed to me lining up at the hot dog stand with 12 kids with different orders, and getting them back to our seats without anyone dropping their overpriced meal.

Seeing the show in a box would be taking a bunch of tweens who think they're young men to do something 'grown up' - and it would be memorable - especially for my gorgeous son. He deserved that.

It would also make me the coolest mum ever, especially because it was a typical 'dad' sort of thing to do.

And being in a box - it would make all of it easy on me. I deserved that.

"Not as expensive as you'd expect"

The cost - remembering that the kids wouldn't have access to the booze stocked in the box - was quite reasonable - maybe $30 -$40 a head extra than what you'd pay at laser tag/bowling/go karting etc.

For me, with all the Pros above, that was worth it for this milestone occasion. For what was being delivered in return.

I know what's you're thinking: this chick's got more money than sense. And she must be a drug dealer.

But this is what you don't know: our life hadn't always been easy. I was a sole parent from when my kid was two, with no support from his dad at all. No shared responsibility. No payments. Ever.

I worked really hard as the professional I'd trained to be to give us a good life, though; so things were different by the time we were partying in a corporate box.

It was a major splurge, sure, but everyone had a blast, the show was spectacular, the food tasted even better because I didn't have to make or serve it, or clean up.

The kids all went home on a high on adrenaline and soft drink - especially my son.

And I had finally achieved my greatest dream: to cement my position as a cool mum, not a regular mum, for all eternity.
