We undoubtedly live in one of the most beautiful countries in the world, but there’s one downside, the wildlife.
Just ask the bloke who had a hilarious encounter with a cockatoo after the feathery creature nabbed his thong.
The bird, of which there are 14 species of in Australia, then took flight with his footwear before landing on a rooftop aerial nearby.
“Bloody cockatoo stole my thong,” he captioned a photo of the incident.
The post quickly went viral, amassing more than 1000 comments from users who dubbed it “the most Australian photo of the year”.
“Cockatoos are the juvenile delinquents of Australian native animals,” one person commented.
“Bogans of the sky,” another joked.
As a result, the snap has made it into the Reddit Recap 2023 Report, with the social media platform listing it as the most popular post on the forum this year.
The data is a “time capsule of the past year’s most vibrant exchanges, touching moments, and utterly hilarious faux pas,” according to Reddit, which also listed a photo of an Australian aisle at a specialty food store in NYC as its third most popular post locally.
On the shelf at Shi Eurasia, located south of Central Park, were a huge range of classic Aussie items, including Bundaberg ginger beer, SAXA chicken salt and, of course, Vegemite.
There were also Shapes for sale, along with Tim Tams, Arnott’s custard cream, Maltesers, Twisties and the classic Wagon Wheels. A bunch of Cadbury products including Cherry Ripe and Turkish Delight were also on offer for homesick Aussies.
Given that the products are specialty items in the US, they don’t come cheap. Tim Tams are reportedly selling for about $13.50 (US$9) and a 25g bag of Shapes for $3 (US$2).
Despite the sky-high prices, most were impressed by the Aussie goodies.
“Now that is a quality line-up, you can tell an actual Aussie battler slogged his guts out to make this happen,” one person wrote.
“This is actually a pretty solid selection. Whoever is in charge of stocking it knows what they’re doing,” another agreed.
Meanwhile another post that made the rankings was in the Australia Nostalgia group which showed a snap of a rubber strip door mat made from recycled tyres.
“Who had one of these?” the caption read, sparking a flurry of responses.
“Literally everyone,” one user teased, as another said they still had them at their front and back doors.
“My school had one outside every classroom,” someone else mused.
As one lamented: “These things took nothing off your shoes whatsoever but everyone had them back in the day.”
The popular online forum also gave an honourable mention to the image of the Matildas who “dazzled in the inaugural Aussie-hosted Women’s World Cup, keeping global fans riveted – even at 30,000 feet above”.
It also pointed out the furore over the “mysterious object found in Western Australia [which] had the Reddit community playing cosmic detectives”.
Ah, Australia, you certainly are special.
