Insane hoard discovered in New York City supermarket
A New Yorker has stumbled across a treasure trove of Australian delicacies and an image of the hoard is going viral.
It’s enough to have you bursting out a rendition of John Williamson’s True Blue.
A New York supermarket aisle stocked with “specialty” Australian food has gone viral on social media.
An image posted to Reddit showed classic items including Bundaberg ginger beer, SAXA chicken salt and of course Vegemite.
There were also Shapes (cheddar flavour) for sale, along with Tim Tams, Arnott’s custard cream, Maltesers, Twisties and the classic Wagon Wheels. A bunch of Cadbury products including Cherry Ripe and Turkish Delight were also on offer for homesick Aussies.
The store in question is Shi Eurasia, located south of Central Park.
And given that they are specialty items, they don’t come cheap. Tim Tams are reportedly selling for about $13.50 (US$9) and a 25g bag of Shapes for $3 (US$2).
Sharp eyed commenters noticed that many of the chocolates are the UK-variety, including the Wagon Wheels.
Nonetheless, most were impressed by the Aussie goodies.
“Now that is a quality line-up, you can tell an actual Aussie battler slogged his guts out to make this happen,” one person wrote.
“100%. This is actually a pretty solid selection. Whoever is in charge of stocking it knows what they’re doing,” another person wrote.
Aussie snacks are also making news after a Canadian expat listed all the Australian foods she would never eat again. She named the items on her hit list “a crime against tastebuds”.
She bagged out Burger Rings, TeeVee snacks, chicken-flavoured shapes, strawberry Freddos and Caramilk chocolate saying they deserved “immediate jail”.
