Label Baguette

IF you miss the first run of fresh bread in the morning, fear not, you can still bag a baguette later in the afternoon. Label Baguette owner Stephane Motte bakes his bread fresh three times a day.

“The life span of a baguette is four hours,” he says, adding that in France, it is unheard of to buy anything but the most recent batch, preferably at its warmest.

While the bakery has been a blessing for the area’s large French Community, Stephane sees it more as a way of introducing people to the unique taste, texture and tradition of this famed French bread.

Within 24 hours, the place was theirs; the concept would come later.

Little Me

IT was an early phone call that set Pete Peters on a career in coffee.

On the opening day of his cousin’s coffee outlet in the CBD, the barista called in sick — could Pete please come in and help out?

It was a hectic day, but Pete was hooked, thriving on the pace and a love for lattes.

Opening up his own place was inevitable, so when the time came, he and wife Natalia set up a small space that featured excellent coffee, evident by the queue of customers in front of the open window. As a nod to his big cousin and how it all started, Peter humbly named it Little Me. — Shop 8, 205 Maroubra Rd

The Bay Bakehouse

OVER the past 40 years, this bakery and lunch spot has been there as Maroubra changed from a working-class town to a more family-friendly beachside suburb with a village vibe reminiscent of its earliest years.

“As the area grows, we’ve grown with it,” co-owner John Bui says, explaining that while they still use the same 40-year-old recipe for their famous meat pies, the focus is now on the light and fresh Vietnamese food that appeals to a more health-conscious population.
