Umni Modern Izakaya

The striking red mural featuring a geisha and the origami cranes painted on the opposite walls aren’t the only works of art in this contemporary take on a Japanese bistro. The food here is not just creative from a culinary standpoint but also visually stunning and an instagrammer’s dream. One of the most popular menu items is the Fresh Ocean on Spoons. Every day, sushi chef Junsik Jeong heads to the fishmonger next door, deciding only then on the evening’s sashimi selection. From there, his imagination takes over and the result is a collection of eight teal ceramic spoons, each with its own innovation. Presented lined up in perfect symmetry on a matching teal board, it’s a meal you’ll never forget. — 152 Lyons Rd

Salt Meats Cheese

The three basic ingredients of Salt Meats Cheese’s namesake may be the foundation for many of their dishes but by no means is that the extent of this impressive menu. There are also dishes such as the delicious Linguine Al Nero with a truly generous helping of sweet scampi and of course, a meat and cheese board that comes from their on-site charcuterie. Even the pizzas feel a bit decadent when topped with aged prosciutto or baby octopus. But it wouldn’t be a meal without dessert and chef Grant Richardson produces something special with the sour cherry mascarpone but fear not — the Nutella pizzas are there to stay. — 125 Victoria Rd

The first thing you notice when walking into this Italian restaurant is the lovely view of the water just beyond the sailboat masts. This vantage point is a source of pride for husband and wife team Claudio and Carmel Carnevale as it’s a far cry from the small restaurant they purchased more than 20 years ago. Claudio now overseas a menu that reflects the elegant waterfront setting with dishes such as Moreton Bay bugs with house made linguine or the delicious oysters topped with a watermelon and tangy vinaigrette salsa. — 2 St George Crescent

Danny works with his chef Michael Pulham, who has spent most of his career in London. The Spanish eggs are a hit with just the right amount of spice. The haloumi burger is a great lunch option.
