There may be a need for speed at the Go-Kart racing next door, but inside this cafe, the real race is to see who gets first dibs on the sliders selection — pork belly, angus beef, marinated chicken or lamb shank. Or try the healthy omelette that Khloe Kardashian ordered when she and her entourage ducked in after the karts. And co-owners Christian Muller and sister-in-law Rebecca Muller have challenged the chefs to their own duel, presenting them with two ingredients and a test as to who can produce the best dish. — 40 Anderson Rd, Smeaton Grange

Everything about this place speaks to the heart but it talks in the subtlest way. From the interior to the plating, everything is sleek and elegant. It brings a real refined touch to family fare. For instance, two simple olive oil jugs brought over by the family’s matriarch when she emigrated from Italy are some of the very few decorative items on display here. Be it the succulent duck with mashed potatoes and greens, or the soft and satisfying gnocchi, which co-owner Nathan Florio refers to as “pillows of love”, this food is meant to complement the table conversation, not dominate it. That is, until it’s time for dessert. — 2/33 Village Circuit, Gregory Hill

Blue Agave Mexican Cantina

Whether it was black beans or hot salsa, for nearly 20 years, Karen Carrett’s family was the wholesaler of choice for restaurants wanting Mexican food products. So when they sold up to take on a new project, opening a Mexican restaurant seemed a natural choice. They even convinced one of their regular customers, Arturo Renteria-Osuna, to set up the menu using authentic recipes from his grandmother’s kitchen back in Mazatlan. Try the ceviche, a seafood and chilli mixture cured in lime along with some enchiladas. Then finish with Arturo’s grandmother’s famous dessert, pastel de tres leches — sponge cakes soaked in three milks. — Level 1, 3/13 Rodeo Rd, Gregory Hills

Harrington Bar and Grill

INSIDE a country club (that serves more as a community centre for the residents of Harrington Grove) is a bar and grill that is equally suited to romantic dinner for two, lunch on the balcony, early breakfast or high tea. French-trained chef Gagan Sharma oversees the menu, which has an emphasis on seasonal and local ingredients as well as steaks from Riverina cattle. There’s an impressive selection of meat cuts, ranging from rump to rib eye, along with vegies and chips or mashed potatoes. — 1 Forestgrove Dr; Harrington Park

Cooking a variety of Thai dishes each night for the 30 to 40 members of her immediate family was good practice for Phay Anderson for when she and husband Paul decided to open up a restaurant. Offering a large menu with traditional Thai foods, she also prepares ones that are more savoury than sweet; something that is indicative of the cuisine in her native country of Laos. — Shop 4a, Oran Park Town Centre
