Great Aunty Three

WITH a 100-year-old recipe for beef pho and the support of his mother, Michael Le bid farewell to the corporate world and set about creating his legacy, a Vietnamese cafe that reflected his family, past and present.

The name is a reference to his grandmother, Great Aunty Three — one of three daughters.

It is the recipe passed down to her that Michael uses, along with ones for their famous bahn mi, Vietnamese rolls that include not just pork but also cracking.

In the past year Michael has made major changes to the place.

The secret recipes of his ancestors remain but he has replaced the dark tones with wallpaper and white benches.

The new look, says Michael: “is warm, gentle and loving, like my wife”. - 115 Enmore Rd

Lidz caps

Ordering up a latte and a Los Angeles Lakers cap is par for the course at this sports mad coffee mecca.

Inspired by a love of sports, particularly American baseball, owner Alan McArthur picked up his NY Yankees cap and opened a place where not only could you get an official “lid” from Australian and American professional sports team but you could also grab a hot dog, such as the Fenway — home to the Boston Red Sox but at Lidz, it’s a German sausage with the most traditional of stadium hotdog toppings: chopped onion, pickle relish, mustard and ketchup. — 97 Enmore Rd

IT all started with a yoga class and an epiphany.

From there Maz Valcorza gave up her hard-partying, chain-smoking and cake-eating days for a healthier lifestyle that included an organic, raw foods diet on which she penned two internationally acclaimed books, The Naked Vegan and Uncooked.

As if that’s not enough, Maz is the woman behind Sydney’s first organic raw food cafe, Sādhanā Kitchen.

Stanbuli

CLASSIC funk tunes are pumping, wine glasses are clinking and conversation is flowing loudly and freely.

It’s exactly what Ibrahim Kasif had hoped to achieve when he set out to honour his Turkish heritage by replicating a typical Istanbul tavern.

At Stanbuli (the nickname for someone from Istanbul), the rowdier vibe is an ideal environment for sharing food, specifically Meze plates.

The small plates get passed around, starting usually with cold dishes such as stuffed artichoke, followed by hotplates then later charcoaled meats. — 135 Enmore Rd

Bauhaus West

IT IS quite a journey from baking scones with his mother in rural Victoria to sipping sake and singing Karaoke in Japan but it’s that combination that led owner Chris Thomas to open his restaurant and bar, Bauhaus West, named after his favourite late-night hangout in Tokyo.

Chris has fused modern Australian with Asian fare. — 163 Enmore Rd
