Aldi selling $7 version of expensive item

The supermarket is stocking a high-end grocery item for a fraction of the normal cost – but you’d better “run to Aldi” so you don’t miss out.

When it comes to fine dining, truffles have got to be up there alongside caviar and lobster.

Truffles sometimes can cost thousands of dollars per kilo – which is why fine food lovers will be excited to hear Aldi is once again selling them at a heavily discounted price.

The German supermarket chain is selling a jar of two truffles for just $6.99, with the return of its Deli Originals Italian Truffles.

It is part of a limited time Special Buys run which is sparking a lot of excitement online.

For the uninitiated, truffles are a “a type of strong odorous mushroom that amplifies the umami level of anything you pair it with, whether it be savoury or sweet,”

Sydney food blogger Adrian Widjonarko told news.com.au.

“It is very difficult to grow, find and store, and as such it can cost over $2000 per kilo,” he said.

Mr Widjonarko shared the news with his 133,000 TikTok followers last week, saying he “can’t believe you can get truffle for $6.99”.

“Run to Aldi people, it’s now available again,” Adrian said in the video, which has been viewed 59,000 times.

“This truffle is super affordable for $6.99, perfect for taste test.”

Truffle lovers who watched the video were also excited by the news, advising others to hurry to the supermarket so they don’t miss out.

“It’s gonna sell out,” one person wrote.

Mr Widjonarko said he liked to pair truffles with “creamy, buttery or oily dishes” like pasta.

“I love them on anything really, even on top of fries or chips with shaved parmesan, they are very delicious,” he told news.com.au.

Aldi first stocked truffles back in 2020, with shoppers flocking to stores to pick up the heavily discounted item.

According to Mr Widjonarko, while Aldi’s truffles were “not as intense” in flavour due to being stored in liquid and at a cheaper price point, they were a good option for first-timers.

“It is great for those who want to be introduced to the world of truffles,” he said.

“A way to make them last longer would be to mash it in some butter to make yourself a truffle butter log in the fridge.”

It’s not the only luxe item Aldi has sold recently. Back in November it stocked lobster tails for $29.99 a two-pack for a limited time.

The Specially Selected Lobster Tails with Garlic Butter Glaze, are wild caught lobsters harvested from Brazil and seasoned with butter, garlic, lemon juice, parsley and salt.

Despite their affordable price tag, fans described them as “absolutely delicious”.

“I have bought them every year for Christmas Day,” one woman wrote on the Aldi Mums Facebook page.

Another added that she buys “them every time they come back into Aldi”.

“Christmas special that I always buy for Christmas Day but eat well before that,” said another.
