Aldi voted Overall Large Chain Champion in Golden Bean awards

Aldi has done it again – taking out a prestigious title for the third year in a row, beating some of the country’s stiffest competition.

We all know how much Aussies love their coffee, so it’s no surprise there’s an annual award celebrating the best in the country.

For the third year in a row, Aldi has taken out the Coffee Judge’s vote for Overall Large Chain Champion in Australia’s largest coffee roasting competition, The Golden Bean.

More than 1100 entries were submitted to the 2021 competition with the German retailer’s Lazzio brand taking out the prestigious title.

There’s eight different types of Lazzio coffee that feature in the range, costing between $4.99 for its Peru Ground to $11.99 for 1kg of its Dark Beans.

It was up against a fierce line-up of bean brewers including Campos coffee with its range starting at $15.50.

Campos, however, took out the Overall Small Chain Champion title alongside Infinity Coffee Roasters, while Coffee Snobs were voted the Overall Champions.

“We are delighted to be recognised for the third year in a row and take out The Golden Bean once again,” Varun Raheja, Aldi Australia coffee buying director said.

“Our partners at Black Bag Roasters work directly with the farmers to grow the highest quality coffee varietals for picking and processing.

“It is our mission that every cup of Lazzio coffee tastes barista-made so we are so pleased that our customers and the Coffee Judges can taste the difference and appreciate the great value.”

Aldi also took out six medals across a range of categories, from Filter Coffee, to Espresso and Milk based Espresso beverages.

Campos’ Blade Runner blend (from $16) were the winners of the Alternative Milk category while its Ethiopia Boledu coffee nabbed the Chain Store (Espresso) award.

White Horse Coffee won the Espresso (short black) category for its Panama Auromar coffee, with other winners including White Label Coffee Roasters in the Milk (Latte) category and Coffee Snobs in the Filter category.

Earlier this year, Aldi took out the title of Best Coffee (beans and ground coffee) in Canstar’s latest Most Satisfied Customer Awards.

More than 940 Aussie consumers were surveyed for their feedback on the brands of coffee beans they purchased to grind and brew at home, from March to May.

They rated more than 10 of the most popular brands in Australia on taste, aroma, texture, packaging, variety, value for money and overall satisfaction.

Aldi was the only one to score a five-star rating for overall satisfaction, but both Harris and Grinders weren’t far behind, coming in second and third respectively.

Lazzio, which is only sold at Aldi stores nationwide, is roasted in Melbourne.

Aldi first partnered with the Victorian-based roasters — Black Bag Roasters — in 2014 and have gone on to create a range of blends including Lazzio Medium and Dark Coffee Beans, Lazzio Medium and Dark Ground Coffee and Organic Ground Coffee.
