'Daylight robbery': Aussie stunned by the cost of an extra egg at cafe

"Why is it more expensive than a 12-pack carton at the supermarket?"

'Can someone explain the why an extra egg cost $6 at a cafe'

How much would you expect to pay for an extra egg on the side of your breakfast?

Alyssa Jayne from the Gold Coast claims \she had to fork out $6 for a single egg at a cafe recently after she realised the $13 'eggs your way' she ordered only came with one egg but two slices of toast.

The price of an extra egg

"Does anyone know, broken down, how much it costs a cafe when someone adds an extra egg, like how much that extra egg would cost them, because why the f**k is it costing us $6?" she said in a TikTok rant that now has over 93k views.

"$6?! No, no, no, no. I am not spending $6 on one single poached egg," she continued.

"I understand you want to profit, but surely that is like daylight robbery."

Alyssa then pointed out that you can buy a 12-pack of eggs from Coles for around $5 or $6, so paying the same amount for an egg at a cafe was "criminal", in her opinion.

"The math isn't mathin'"

Many Aussies were outraged by the fee, sharing their own experiences and pointing out other charges that didn't make sense.

"And when I ask to remove the poached egg from my Caesar salad, is the salad not $6 cheaper??" someone asked.

"They're charging $6 to add avo now. I already had to take out the bacon and cheese from my meal but you didn't minus those from the price," a second shared.

Someone else made the point: "Poached eggs should always be two eggs. Was the menu item called 'poached egg'."

"When I go out for breakfast, I get eggs, Benny, but I always want to add a tomato, avo and a hash brown, but then I remember that would cost $16, and that's criminal," another cafe-goer revealed.

However, others defended cafes, saying that it wasn't just to cover the cost of ingredients but all overheads.

"Because you're paying for the egg, the person cooking the egg, the water, the power...," someone replied.

And a cafe owner chimed into the discussion, writing: "Cafe owner here. Single egg cost 0.36 but the cost of doing business is like $180,000 a year for staff, utilities and rent, not including the cost of goods (raw food pricing)."
