‘Wait, what?’: Melbourne cafe sparks frenzy online with ‘ridiculous’ menu item

“I hope they don’t go bust selling that stuff!”

Dos and Don'ts: Understanding cafe etiquette

A Melbourne cafe has gone viral online after offering a cheeky milk alternative to their daily brew.

Making their way through Collins Street in the Docklands, a local stopped by a nearby cafe for their daily caffeine fix.

When looking at the cafe’s decor, they spotted a sign that nearly made them spit out their beverage

"Please go next week and report back"

Sitting atop a wooden cold drip coffee maker was a small chalkboard sign listing the types of milk available for purchase.

“Now serving: almond milk, oat milk,” the sign read. “Next week … breast milk.”

The Melbourne man was shocked by the sign, snapping a picture and uploading it to Reddit

“Wait wut?” he captioned the post. He later revealed the name of the Melbourne cafe - Sergy Boy - and asked the staff about the sign (likely confirming whether it was a joke or not).

The post quickly went viral online, amassing a wave of responses from equally shocked and amused Australians.

“I choked on water reading that,” a person said. “Please go next week and report back.”

It was an obvious joke to most, with Redditors taking every opportunity to squeeze out a milk-related pun or two.

“I hope that they don't go bust selling that stuff,” someone joked. “Bit ridiculous, isn tit,” another chimed in.

“They might go tits up if they don't sell out,” a third added.

Others remarked how “Melbourne” the sign was, comparing it to other classics like “Free beer tomorrow”.

“I worked at a cafe a few years back when all the alternate milks were just hitting the scene, and we added Unicorn Milk to our board to take the piss out of it all,” read a comment.

“A Boomer asked in all seriousness, 'Where do we source the unicorn milk'?”

But some weren’t so sure if it was a joke or not. “Breast milk from a cow...right?” a confused person wrote.

“Everybody’s happy; they know it’s a joke”

Speaking to Kidspot, Duffey, the owner of the Sergy Boy, spilled the tea on the cheeky sign, which he assured us was “a complete joke”.

So, dear reader, please don't stress; there’s no chance of having a cappuccino with a side of boobie juice.

“We want to put a smile on people’s faces,” he said.

It turns out the sign was the brainchild of the cafe’s head barista, who recently welcomed a baby.

“Our head barista, Amanda, was pregnant a couple of months ago,” he said. “So she came just came in and was like, ‘Can I write this to make you happier?’ And I was like, ‘Sure, why not?’”

It’s been a little while since they introduced the sign, but it's quickly become an iconic feature of the cafe.

Duffey revealed to Kidspot that the response to the cheeky sign has been pretty good so far. “Everybody’s happy; they know it’s a joke,” he laughed. “They always take a photo and put it on Instagram. Everybody’s talking in a fun way.”

However, not everyone seems to enjoy the Melbourne cafe’s sense of humour, with Duffey recalling one angry customer sharing their feelings about the signs.

“This lady came in and said, ‘Oh, this is offensive!’ but we did tell her it was written by a woman, so if you have a problem, you can talk to her,” he said.

“Some people may take it wrong, but it’s OK. I mean, we can’t make everybody happy, right?”
