Stars can’t stop talking about animal sperm as a treatment for all their woes. Why are we so obsessed with it?
If you were weirded out by people using snail mucin and beef tallow as skincare, you’re going to hate this.
You’d think we’d be used to celebrities admitting to using wild ingredients in their beauty and wellness routines, and yet we’re still surprised by their chosen products almost weekly.
Hollywood’s latest obsession? Animal sperm.
I never thought I’d hear so much about animal secretions, and yet my feed is full of celebrities and influencers injecting or swallowing sperm from various species in the hopes of reaping potential benefits.
Snake sperm drinks
The most recent star dabbling in animal sperm products isn’t who we’d expect.
Singers often keep tea or honey on hand to help soothe their vocal cords, and following Jessica Simpson’s first on-stage performance in over a decade, the star revealed her potion of choice.
Her vocal teacher had recommended a syrup-like drink with an unexpected ingredient to prepare her vocal cords.
The I Wanna Love You Forever singer has been drinking snake sperm.
Simpson recounted a conversation in an Instagram reel, saying, “They’re like, ‘What are you drinking?’ It’s this Chinese herb thing. I’m like ‘I don’t know. My vocal coach told me to drink it'.”
“And they Googled it and it’s snake sperm. It’s like a honey,” Simpson laughed. “If you want a good vocal, you gotta drink snake sperm!” she added.
Salmon sperm facials
This came after Kim Kardashian, Jennifer Aniston, and recently, hordes of creators online have injected salmon sperm under their skin to try to look more youthful.
The treatment is used to rejuvenate skin that’s starting to age, and can be used anywhere on the body where you want skin to heal, or appear more plump and smooth.
The idea is that by extracting long chains of amino acids from wild salmon sperm DNA and injecting them into human skin, the naturally occurring skin remodelling process could be replicated.
Following the injections, people have been posting videos on social media showing their faces covered in red raised welts at the injection sites.
It’s not just sperm, people are looking to other alternative animal products to hopefully deliver skin-perfecting benefits.
Animal products in beauty
We’re used to animal products having a place in our bathroom cabinets. It’s likely you’ve used lanolin, goat’s milk or beeswax at one time or another if you’ve ever had overly dry skin.
In recent years, more unexpected animal products have been popping up throughout the beauty industry.
Everyone’s favourite Korean beauty product, snail mucin has been slathered on faces around the world to achieve gorgeous glass skin.
Bee venom has been added to many a lip plumping gloss, and a part of facials for the last few years thanks to its potential plumping abilities.
Beef tallow has been applied like a moisturiser to the skin of creators and beauty enthusiasts to improve their skin barrier.
We’re still not allowed to just age
Youth is still commodified and sold to us as the ultimate beauty goal.
Those who are uncomfortable with changes to their features as they age are evidently willing to try anything and everything to hold onto their youthful looks.
Even those with the weakest stomachs have trialled the most controversial treatments after being promised increased elasticity, volume, cell restoration and other skin features that deplete with age.
We’re seeing fewer obviously aging female faces on our screens, in advertising and media, so the pressure to hold onto our youthful looks really isn’t easing up. And people are accepting the pain, discomfort, and unease in the hopes of looking younger.
