Aussie outraged over 'criminal' cost of Vegemite toast at Sydney cafe

She claimed they were "laughing their heads off that they could get away with giving me that," while she felt "scammed."

Cafe inflation: customers fed up with skyrocketing prices

From overpriced iced teas to extra fees to toast sandwiches, Aussie cafes have been criticised for being extremely unaffordable, especially during the current cost-of-living crisis.

And the latest rants on social media prove that the great cafe debate shows no signs of slowing down.

From a 28-year-old who was left shocked by the price of her Vegemite toast in Sydney's Northern Beaches, to a Perth woman who complained about a $40 vegan sandwich...

She paid HOW much for Vegemite toast?!

First up, TikToker Nikki Potter revealed that she was charged almost $14 for a takeaway toast and coffee combo in Sydney's north.

She told her followers: "I ordered Vegemite on sourdough and a small, soy flat white.

"And in the city that would normally cost around $10 or maybe $11. It cost me $13.90."

She then asked if she had a "right" to be annoyed about this because she wasn't sure if this was standard in Dee Why, where she bought the breakfast.

She then held up her coffee cup and said, "It's very small, like it's an extra small... I know what a small coffee looks like, but it's not this.

Nikki then showed off her Vegemite toast, which she had to construct herself with the two plastic containers of Vegemite and butter she was given.

She acknowledged that everyone has different ration preferences, however, she didn't even receive a knife to spread them with.

It gets worse.

One of the two pieces of toast she received was an "absolutely measly baby little piece of bread," she said, holding up both pieces side by side, showing that one was obviously half the size of the other. "Clearly it's the dregs of the loaf."

She then claimed that the cafe was "laughing their heads off that they could get away with giving me that," while she felt "scammed."

In the caption, she added: "I could’ve bought my own loaf AND Vegemite and butter for $14 😭😭. Am I crazy?"

Thankfully for her, commenters were equally as unimpressed, with one saying, "The audacity of that tiny toast!"

"The no knife is criminal!" wrote another.

And a third suggested: "Take it back!"

Then, there was the $40 vegan sandwich

It comes after a Perth local forked out $40 for a takeaway sandwich last week.

"Cost of living is no joke," Mea Jasmin said in her TikTok, showing off the vegan toastie.

"I’m trying not to laugh. I got a vegan eggplant sandwich. I paid $40, guys. $40. I’m just going to leave it at that. Maybe it tastes amazing," she said.

It had two pieces of sliced tomato, avocado, roasted eggplant and a spread.

But this time, commenters were less sympathetic.

"$40 for a sandwich. Why did you buy it?" one comment with 1.5k likes asked.

"Did you not see the price before ordering?" someone else questioned.

And a third told her, "Cook at home."
