When it comes to rock ‘n’ roll, two things will forever hold true.
Rock gods will be rock gods and groupies will be groupies.
The biggest surprise of the week from the music industry was not Taylor Swift’s endorsement of Kamala Harris or the resolution of Cher’s conservatorship battle with her son Elijah Blue, it was Foo Fighter’s frontman Dave Grohl’s public whipping for acknowledging the birth of a child outside his marriage to wife Jordyn Blum.
Up until now, Grohl, one of the music biz’s nicest and most relatable guys, could do no wrong.
He could mock religion, he could drink-drive and get arrested on the Gold Coast, he could fall out with Kurt Cobain’s ex Courtney Love and be celebrated for it – remarkably he even survived recently mocking Tay Tay by suggesting she didn’t play live during her Eras tour.
But following Grohl’s decision to announce and recognise the recent birth of a daughter outside his marriage, Grohl has copped a battering from sections of the media, Hollywood and the public.
Others though have cheered him for quickly acknowledging the infant.
Grohl has said he will be “a loving and supportive parent to her ... and do everything I can to regain (the) trust and ... forgiveness” of his wife and three daughters.
It’s a public acknowledgement many rockers deny their love children.
Oasis singer Liam Gallagher fought paternity claims after American journalist Liza Ghorbani took him to court seeking child support following the birth of a daughter during Gallagher’s marriage to Nicole Appleton; Flo Rida refused to acknowledge paternity of a son despite a DNA test finding the likelihood was 99.9 per cent; and Sir Tom Jones is yet to meet a son born of an affair, though he has forked out maintenance.
The list of bad famous fathers is long.
Grohl’s second marriage may not survive his new daughter’s birth – it’s not looking good at the moment – but the world’s love for the drummer will because, in rock ‘n’ roll, rebellion and bad behaviour are great for business.
