Young Australians not worried to look like they’ve had cosmetic surgery, doctor reveals

To Kardashian or not to Kardashian, that is the question cosmetic doctor Jonathan Hopkirk is asked daily. He revealed young Australians are willing to go over the top with their medical enhancements and that they are not ashamed to appear like they’ve had work done.

Australians splash billions on cosmetic surgeries

To Kardashian or not to Kardashian, that is the question Jonathan Hopkirk is asked daily.

Increasingly, the cosmetic doctor says young Australians are willing to go over the top with their medical enhancements and that they are not ashamed to appear like they’ve had work done.

“You have younger people, say 20 to 30, they are not worried about looking like they’ve had treatments,” the Laser Clinics Australia Medical Director told Confidential.

“They want more bold, enhanced features that people notice and recognise they’ve had treatments. They want their lips to be full and juicy. They want their cheeks to be overly enhanced.”

He continued: “There are trends that come from what you see on social media with Instagram and things. The Kardashians definitely have a lot to answer for in that space. When they started getting their lips done, it became a huge thing and people wanted to copy that.”

On the other hand, men and women are also seeking what Dr Hopkirk describes as “magic work”.

“I am finding now there is a bit of a divide in the trends. You have two different groups — those who want to look like they have had work done and those that don’t,” he explained. “Magic work for me is when a client wants you to do the best treatment for them that will make them look as great as possible keeping within their look. They don’t want to look like they’ve had work done but they want to look fantastic. I take more of a conservative approach and my group are more 30 upwards and they want you to do work that makes them look as great as possible without making them look like they’ve had any work done.”

Increasingly too, as procedures like fillers and Botox have become more affordable, Australians are getting more work done. Micro filler is one of the newer treatments Dr Hopkirk is using.

“We live in a diverse world. There is a lot of colour,” he said.

“Social media has changed it all. What trends are set are based around celebrities on social media and what people are seeing. Why it wasn’t really available to have these things previously was a price thing. Now it is much more affordable. In the past people who wanted to have cosmetic procedures or enhancements, they potentially couldn’t afford it. So affordability and accessibility is another major change.”
