Singer and actress Marcia Hines is to transform into a disco diva.

The veteran performer who first found fame in the 1970s is to take to the stage in a new adaptation of the musical Saturday Night Fever.

She will play the role of The Diva, a character written specifically for Hines herself.

“It’s terribly exciting. This version of Saturday Night Fever has not been seen in Australia, only Paris so far”, the 65-year-old said.

This new production pays homage to the hit film Saturday Night Fever and is jampacked with disco classics including Stayin’ Alive and How Deep is Your Love.

“The soundtrack is stunning and I’m a huge huge fan of the Bee Gees. If it’s got Bee Gees songs in it, I’m there”, said Hines.

“I’ll also be singing two of my songs that I recorded a while ago.”

Saturday Night Fever tells the story of 19-year old Tony Manero, a young working-class man from Brooklyn whose weekends are spent at the local discotheque.

In this production, Hines’ character performs at the Disco Odyssey 2001 nightclub frequented by Manero.

“The disco era was a really fun time. A little bit of bad fashion granted but just great music and a really happy time”, she said.

With over 45 million copies sold, the Saturday Night Fever remains the best-selling soundtrack of all time.

For American-born Hines, whose career in Australia started with the 1970s musicals Hair and Jesus Christ Superstar, stage productions hold a special place in her heart and she loves the challenge of a new role.

“I like the camaraderie, the ensemble pieces and the fun. The friendships you gather, they’re wonderful and can last a lifetime.”
