IT WAS an early love affair we had with Sophie Monk on The Bachelorette but one thing was apparent when we were first introduced to her suitors — she was never going to find true love.
Despite being one of the hottest pieces of eye candy to set foot on Australian TV, Apollo at age 24 appeared parachuted onto the reality program for his killer looks and not necessarily his potential to have a future with the 37-year-old.
And as the men departed from their limos — from Harry, 24, Hayden, 29, Jourdan, 25 and jeez the list goes on — it was becoming more transparent that ratings not love was on top of the network’s agenda.
Oh the laughs we had as an audience.
I could imagine the producers rubbing their hands together when on the first night Jourdan cried because his ex girlfriend didn’t cheat on him. Yes, you read that right.
He also managed to don a moon boot in subsequent episodes for no explained reason.
The only man who was age appropriate was a blond Sideshow Bob lookalike Jamie, 38. His white suit had more character than he did so of course Soph gave him a flick early on.

As we watched while Sophie told us she was just a “bogan” trying to “find love” we all knew that bad boy Ryan, 26, wasn’t what she meant when she said she wanted to find an average bloke.
While this was all laughable and entertaining, The Bachelorette was missing a huge point.
Sophie, who we’ve seen on our TV screens for 20 years, had put herself — and her celebrity profile — all on the line for a last-ditch attempt at love.
A couple of boy toys for cheap ratings, was kind of a slap in the face.
Sophie cried in the introduction of this season telling us how she compromised her love life for her international career — her cries perhaps should’ve been taken more seriously.
Channel 10 made it more obvious to us that daggy dad bods and unattractive oldies, don’t rate.
I get it.
We only got the realistic contenders of the show when the intruders arrived midway through the season. But it was too late.
Lucky for Stu Laundy, 44, he had crossed paths with Sophie and that kept him safe.
Let’s go down memory lane and mourn the short-lived TV lives of the other intruders AJ, 37, Guy, 37 and Paul, 37 — they all had one thing in common and that was they weren’t hot shots but they were certainly more suitable for our Sophie.
All eyes were on cashed-up Stu to win over her heart and as the finale boiled down to the final two with dubbed stage-five clinger Jarrod, 31, Australia let off a universal “duh” when her new flame was finally confirmed.
The take away point here is that The Bachelor and The Bachelorette are understandably looking at rateable characters over finding that love-seeking single a good match.
Sophie wasn’t immune to this TV tactic.
A good intruder twist with some more suitable fellas meant that Sophie was able to leave with what she came for — the love of her life.
But for the other contestants of the Channel 10 show, they may not have found themselves as lucky.
