The line wrapped around blocks and screams filled the air as international superstar Central Cee shut down Oxford St in Paddington on Tuesday afternoon, with fans swarming the rapper as he made his way out of his Australian clothing drop.
Fans were lined up from before 4am to see the British rapper and buy some of his clothing, after his performance at Monday’s Field Day 2024 in The Domain.
Some of his biggest supporters dished out hundreds of dollars to wear one of his hoodies or tracksuit.
What was similar to scenes at a music festival on Oxford St turned into a mosh pit as thousands of mad fans hurled their way towards the door of the Verona Palace Theatre.
Jacob Zahra, 18, and his mates lined up early to see the rapper but were dragged to the back of line as the crowd continued to build and people were falling onto the road.
“I got here at 7 and made my way to the front but when it got busier the police dragged me and heaps of others to the back,” he said.
“I came to meet him today but I don’t think anyone is going to get many chances to see him.”
Two friends from Sydney’s west Samantha King and Trista Huynh also joined the large crowd but faced the same fate as the thousands of other disappointed fans of the rapper.
“I saw him last year but he didn’t drop any merch so I came here to sus him out and get some shirts but (they) all sold out and he left which was not ideal.” Ms Huyn said.
Despite the big crowd filling the streets, Central Cee fans believed that a lot of the spectators were only there as it would give them something to do, taking away from the expereince.
“There’s a lot of sheep here for sure, people just want to be a part of something and don’t really know who he is,” Ms King said.
Central Cee, born Oakely Caesar-Su, began recording music when he was 14 and rose to fame in 2020 with the singles Day in the Life and Loading.
His first mixtape Wild West debuted at No. 2 on the UK Albums Chart, and his second mixtape 23 in February 2022 went straight to the top.
His June 2023 single Sprinter, with Dave, is the longest-running No. 1 rap son in the UK, staying in the position for 10 weeks.
