After what was one of Sydney’s biggest New Year’s Eve gatherings, the party kicked on into Monday with the sold-out Field Day music festival at the Domain getting into full swing.
Many of the 28,000 revellers didn’t get any sleep, going straight from their evening festivities into the first hours of 2024 partying the park.
“It can be surreal sometimes playing to a crowd that size,” singer Savannah Osei told The Daily Telegraph.
“You want to take it all in, but your adrenaline’s pumping and when the show’s over you go ‘what just happened’?”
Starting out as DJs and fast becoming favourites on the festival circuit, New South Wales sisters Briony and Savannah Osei of Kinder took the stage in the early afternoon.
“It’s one of the best feelings,” Briony said.
The 31-year-old and her younger sister Savannah, 27, split their time between their home bases of Sydney and Maitland, NSW.
Securing a main stage performance in the company of six-time ARIA-nominated G Flip, internationally acclaimed electronic exports Luude and Rüfüs Du Sol, and UK rapper Central Cee is no small feat.
“Briony went to university in Bathurst and started DJ’ing there. Then she came back and taught me in her holidays and I was always writing music and then we put the two together,” Savannah said.
That was six years ago. Now the Ghanian-Australian duo spend most of their year chasing summer, flying between Australia, the U.S and Europe to perform at music festivals.
“There’s more opportunities for female DJs and producers than when we first started, especially in the electronic music scene,” Briony said. “There’s been a resurgence of dance music.”
Kinder’s 2023 has been, in a word, “chaotic”.
“I have a fold-out Koala couch at Briony’s place in Sydney I’m on most nights, but we’re planning to move overseas so we can live and work together,” Savannah said.
“In this competitive industry you’re always wanting to take that next step,” Briony added.
“It’s tough. I’m manifesting a calmer, more grounded 2024.”
