‘Shocked, crying’: G Flip’s reaction to six ARIA nominations day before 30th birthday

“I’ve been crying for an hour, it’s one of the highlights of my life’: Here’s how G Flip celebrated leading the ARIA nominations for No.1 album Drummer.

Six-time ARIA nominated musician G Flip is literally sobbing with happiness.

“I’ve been crying for an hour straight,” they tell Confidential on Zoom, backstage ahead of a Californian concert on the US leg of their sold out Drummer tour.

The 30-year-old — who used to play in wedding bands and work in a drum shop on Chapel Street — cemented their status as one of Australia’s hottest musical exports with their sophomore album.

The new material is, of course, a celebration of their marriage to American actor and host of Selling Sunset, Chrishell Stause, in May. It’s also an ode to a few relationship bust-ups that occurred prior to their coming together.

“Although I’m happily married now a lot of the songs on my album are about past relationships,” they said.

“I have a vault of songs from 2019, and prior to my debut album About Us.”

Drummer is the No. 1 album on the ARIA charts, while About Us peaked at number six.

“Chrishell’s favourite songs on the album are honestly all the songs I’ve written about ex-partners and breakups,” Flippo said.

“They’re her favourites because she gets it. That’s what music is about: feeling the emotion that comes from everyday life. All my music is a diary.”

G Flip is nominated for Album of the Year, Best Australian Live Act, Best independent Release, Best Rock Album, Best Solo Artist and Best Video, earning the same number of nominations as Troye Sivan and Kylie Minogue.

“It’s very overwhelming. I struggle to hold back tears. I just didn’t expect this to happen so I’m really stoked. Sorry, I’m the most emotional person in the world right now,” Flippo said.

The nominations came as an early 30th birthday present for G Flip, who entered a new decade of life with a performance at Dinah Shore in Palm Springs, California on Saturday.

Best Live Act is the nomination that means the most to the multi-instrumentalist, whose concerts are a high-octane environment curated by punchy choreography, engaging crowd interaction, and all-round good vibes.

“My house rules are don’t be a d--khead,” G Flip told crowds at two Enmore Theatre shows this month.

“I hoped that we’d get nominated for that because I knew how excited my band would all be and I was happy just getting that. But to get nominated for five others is pretty crazy.”

On Friday, G Flip released an additional song ‘Australia’, which was previously a special extra only for live audiences, and fans who bought the vinyl.

“It’s a love letter back to Australia because always when I’m here in the States, I miss home a lot,” Flippo, who lives between Los Angeles and Melbourne, said.

“The Australian tour was so phenomenal and just the highlight of my life.”
