Unfazed Sophie Monk signs on as ambassador for controversial Chinese tech company
Chinese tech giant Huawei has been accused of posing a national security risk but that hasn’t stopped ex-Bachelorette Sophie Monk signing up as its ambassador, saying a mobile that doesn’t need recharging for 48 hours would be better than sex.
When Sophie Monk dialled in to become phonemaker Huawei’s new ambassador, she wasn’t thinking about international espionage or Australia’s 5G ban on the Chinese tech giant.
“I’m lucky to know who the prime minister is, so the politics behind it I don’t really understand,” Monk told The Daily Telegraph yesterday.
“All I want is a good phone; I don’t really care where it comes from.”

Of more concern to the former Bachelorette star than the company’s suspected ties to the Chinese government and military is the battery life offered by Huawei’s new Mate20 Pro.
It is promised to be 48 hours without recharging, something the company claims research has shown one in three Australians would give up sex for.
“I would dead set give up sex for that, 100 per cent; I can’t live without my phone. I would get lost, I wouldn’t eat.”
Huawei is the world’s largest tech equipment maker but is embroiled in international spying allegations.
The government announced in August Huawei was banned from taking part in Australia’s next generation mobile network, 5G, because of national security concerns.
New Zealand, the US and other western nations have expressed concerns about the company possibly getting access to information networks that could include defence, government and commercial secrets.
The arrest of a senior Huawei executive for allegedly breaking international trade sanctions on Iran further inflamed tensions.
Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei denies the spying claims.
Asked about privacy issues with Huawei, Monk seemed more worried about hacking of personal details than national secrets.
“I was thinking even if a nude shot got out there, I’d rather have my phone with everything on it and take that risk,” she said.
