That’s one way of skipping a lockdown.
Hollywood superstar Matt Damon has upped stumps and flown home to the United States after more than five months based Down Under.
Damon was flanked by two of his three daughters — believe to be eldest Isabella and middle child Gia — as they made their way through Sydney’s International Airport terminal and checked in at the American Airlines Priority counter.
Damon, 50, and his daughters, one of whom was walking with crutches, had earlier flown via private jet from what has been their Byron Bay base.
There was no sign of youngest daughter, Stella, or Damon’s wife, Luciana.
The Hollywood star has been in Australia shooting Chris Hemsworth’s Marvel flick, Thor: Love and Thunder, alongside the likes of Geoff Goldblum, Natalie Portman, Russell Crowe and Tessa Thompson.
He has long spoken of his love of all things Australia, encouraged by close mate Hemsworth.
“I’m so excited that my family and I will be able to call Australia home for the next few months,” the actor said in a January statement when he arrived in the country and undertook mandatory quarantine.
“Australian film crews are world-renowned for their professionalism and are a joy to work with so the 14 days of quarantine will be well worth it. Australia definitely is the lucky country, and I can’t wait to show my family Australia’s down to earth people, breathtaking scenery and diverse culture.”
At the time, Prime Minister Scott Morrison heralded Damon’s arrival as a “big win” for the industry.
“Australia’s management of COVID-19 and our Government’s tax incentives have ensured that our film industry is booming with many new jobs for actors as well electricians, carpenters, cooks, security staff, bus drivers and a massive boost for NSW,” he said.
Damon is understood to be flying home to Los Angeles to promote his new crime thriller film, Stillwater, due out in August.
He is also slated to begin work on a number of projects both in front of the camera and producing.
In May, Damon conducted an American breakfast television interview to promote Stillwater on the US Today show from The Park Hotel in Suffolk Park near Byron Bay.
“I’m in Australia, I’m having a beer. The people at the local club were nice enough to leave it open just so that I could do this (interview),” he said in the interview.
“They’ve got the best internet connection in this neighbourhood where I am.”
