The Bachelor finale: Matty J reveals his true love

SPOILERS! The Bachelor Matty J has picked his love in the reality TV show’s season finale. But you might not be surprised who got the final red rose.

THE worst kept secret in The Bachelor history has finally been revealed with Matthew “Matty J” Johnson giving his final rose, and a ring, to “Rushcutters Bay” jewellery designer Laura Byrne.

Byrne was among the bookies and fans favourite to win the Channel 10 reality show.

Even other Bachelorettes knew they didn’t stand a chance. Runner- up Elise Stacy told The Daily Telegraph she was concerned the whole three months of shooting that the marketing executive’s heart had already been taken. While third runner up Tara Pavlovic said she found her experience on the show “boring.”

While the Bondi-based Johnson understood viewers wanted “ a nail bitting finish,” it was always going to be no surprise.

“On the one hand you appreciate there is a TV show being made and you want to be entertaining but at the same time I got what I came for and I don’t care,” the happily in love Johnson said.

“Do I wish on night one I could have just said goodbye to the 20 other girls and go Laura’s the one? I wish I could have.”

With the show being filmed in advance, the two — who moved in similar social circles prior to applying for the show — had to hide their love, although not very well. Producers arranged for secret weekends away, one of which was followed heavily by the paparazzi.

However one meeting happened without even the producers knowing. “I saw Laura at the gym after filming. I looked over and she was there, I was like, Oh my goodness,” says Johnson.

“It was pure coincidence but frustrating because I couldn’t go over to her. I just ran to my phone and said “I really want to kiss you right now.”

The couple are now looking forward to not having to hide their feelings — or the engagement- style ring that the marketing executive gave Byrne during the final rose ceremony.

“To be clear it’s not an engagement ring,” laughed Bryne. “But I love it!”
