If things in TV and don’t work out, the boys of Channel 7 morning TV could always consider a side hustle as fitness influencers.
Fresh from Larry Emdur’s transformation from dad-bod king to pumped-up powerhouse, Sunrise sports host Mark Beretta, 54, is also clocking up some serious mileage on his stationary bike after signing on as an Aussie spokesman for Echelon – the low-budget alternative to the pricier Pelotons.
But this is no ‘cash for comment’ gig for Beretta who is legitimately racking up some herculean sweat time atop the hi-tech two-wheeler which he’s had installed in a his lounge room at the Mosman home which he shares with wife Rachael and kids Dan, 13, and Ava, 16.
“I put it right in the middle of the lounge room so every time I walk past it it’s calling me to jump on,” says Beretta, who is notching about 300km per week on top of daily gym workouts.
“I think it’s one of those things for me. If I don’t do it, I just feel so much worse.
“And as you get older you realise, okay, it’s time to get serious. Especially if you have kids … you want to be able to keep up with them.”
But it’s not all in vain for the veteran sportscaster. Beretta is also prepping for the annual Tour De Cure – his annual 1000km ride in aid of charity research – which kicks off over one week in March.
As for who would win a bench-press between he and the equally fitness-mad Emdur, Beretta says it would be a “line ball”.
“I reckon I could give Laz a decent shake,” he laughs.
