A stunt designed to attract viewers to Channel 9’s embattled Today has backfired spectacularly with co-host Allison Langdon remaining in hospital on the Gold Coast after a water demo on Thursday went horribly wrong.
A Nine spokesman confirmed Langdon, who was rushed to Gold Coast Private Hospital just after 7am on Thursday after the accident, was still being treated by doctors as of Friday morning.
It’s understood the mother-of-two is hoping to return to Sydney over the weekend provided she is given the all-clear by doctors following a series of tests and a MRI scan.
Langdon injured her leg as part of a stunt during which she and her co-host Karl Stefanovic were attempting to ride a hover surfboard or ‘hydrofoil’ board.
Depending on the severity of the injury the Today frontwoman could be laid up for some time, with injuries involving ligament damage sometime requiring months of rest and immobilisation.
It followed a week which saw Today broadcasting from the Gold Coast’s famed Burleigh Beach as part of their ongoing battle with Channel 7’s Sunrise for ratings supremacy.
And already questions are being asked about what led to Langdon’s shock injury and what safety processes were being observed by Nine’s production crew.
“You don’t injure your co-host,” one rival executive told Confidential in the wake of the accident.
“You just don’t put them in danger like that. Something clearly went horribly wrong.”
Asked what safety precautions were being practised, a Nine rep said: “(Langdon and Karl Stefanovic) had a comprehensive safety induction, and a thorough run-through of all aspects of hydrofoiling.
“As with every shoot, safety requirements, briefings and subsequent after-care, are strictly followed and prioritised.”
Today, meanwhile, continues to suffer in the ratings, trailing Sunrise on Thursday by just over 100,000 viewers across the five-city metro figures.
