Shameless! While other television executives like to keep themselves behind the scenes, Sunrise executive producer Michael Pell has yet again made himself the story.
Raising eyebrows among staff at Channel 7s Martin Place Studios as well as rival networks, a whole segment on air of the top rating breakfast show was dedicated to none other than the 38-year-old.
Last Thursday, Pell walked on set to join hosts Sam Armytage, David Koch, Edwina Bartholomew and Mark Beretta to sit in front of a large cake with his head on it to mark his 10th anniversary in the job.
“It has been the thrill and the joy of my life,” he said on the Sunrise couch, referring to the presenters as his “children”.
The segment was also posted on the official Sunrise social media accounts.
When contacted, a Sunrise spokesman said the cake presentation and segment was a complete surprise to Pell.
Pell meanwhile recently featured in Confidential when it was revealed he is in a relationship with baby-faced staff member Daniel Burgess-Wise, a director on the show. The pair began dating after Burgess-Wise, 28, joined the team.
Interestingly, it was in the same studio that Pell formed a relationship, then as a junior employee, with his former boss, ex Sunrise chief Adam Boland, back in 2006 with that romance lasting until 2009.
Pell has also been working on The Voice, which Seven poached from Nine earlier this year. He recently revealed he had been in confidential talks with superstar Mariah Carey for a position on the show.
