STU Laundy has opened up about his break-up with Sophie Monk for the first time, revealing he discovered they had split via Instagram.
The 45-year-old millionaire, who spoke to Fitzy and Wippa this morning, said The Bachelorette set made feelings “escalate.”
“To be honest I think we were just better suited as mates and we couldn’t work it out on the show because you get a little bit influenced — and I was probably very naive,” he told the radio duo.
“We just became better mates, would be my assessment.
“I found out via Instagram (of the break-up) but having said that we both knew it in our hearts. We had discussed pushing more towards a friendship.
“I found the love of my life once and I’ll have to keep searching unfortunately.”
Laundy told the Nova radio hosts that media attention caused “stress” in their relationship.
“We certainly did have a few little tiffs about what was said because a lot of it was hurtful,” he said.
“We’re the best of friends and I think we will be for a long time. She’s the funniest girl I’ve ever met in my life — hilarious.
“The way that they do that show (The Bachelorette) you sort of feel like a caged lion — everyone was feeling the same way. Your feelings really escalate because of the way they run the show. I was living out of the QT in Bondi doing all the promotions and stuff. We were living out of a suitcase and living in each others’ pockets so that is when we really got to know each other in the fair-dinkum department.”
Monk told KIIS FM’s Kyle and Jackie O this morning: “They create drama in media sometimes and you start to believe it or you start arguing over it and it’s just ridiculous.”
When shock jock Kyle Sandilands asked whether she had sex with anyone after the split, she hit back: “God no! You guys are a** holes.”
“That was completely random. I’m going to send an invoice in now,” she added.

Last week, Monk confirmed the split news in a late-night Instagram post.
“I don’t know how to explain this because it’s an unusual circumstance to be in,” she wrote.
“But because I entered this relationship so publicly, I know I owe an answer to Australia about my personal life.
“I went into this experience looking to settle down and start a family.
“I gave it the best shot I could and my intentions were everything I said I was looking for, but unfortunately it just didn’t work out.
“As much as I respect him [Laundy], we are just very different people.
“There were no contracts or pressure to stay together whatsoever from anyone and we remain friends.
“The positive in this whole experience is it taught me to jump out of my comfort zone in order to find real love and made me much stronger.”
Monk and Laundy’s relationship has been dogged by rumours that they had broken up ever since The Bachelorette finale aired in October.
Many fans were unconvinced by the match.
While Monk has been unlucky in love, her career is more successful than ever after winning hearts — and big ratings — on Channel 10’s love contest last year.
She will be back on our screens in 2018 as the host of Channel 9’s new reality show Love Island.
Monk first came to prominence in 2000 as a contestant on the seminal reality TV singing contest Popstars, which saw her enjoy chart success as a member of the girl group Bardot.
